What is this “Information Architecture” mumbo jumbo?

I recently told someone I was an Information Architect and was met with a look of bemusement and suspicion. Once I’d explained what I do, the person I was speaking to realised I could be useful to them. This got me thinking – how many people understand IA and how it can be applied to them?
